Washington, DC – Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27) released the following statement following the first State of the Union Address of President Obama’s second term:
“Tonight, President Obama showed how an investment in a thriving middle class is an investment in a thriving America. Funding schools, roads, and clean energy allows us to better compete with other countries and rebuild our economy from the middle class out. The perfect example of that is Pasadena’s own Bobak Ferdowsi, who joined the First Lady to watch the speech. Bobak earned national attention for his stylish individualism, but his story speaks to ambitions we all share. He rose to become a Flight Director on the Mars Curiosity Rover, excelling in the kind of STEM job that will define the American workforce in the 21st Century. Despite his success, he continues to bring up the next generation of talent, volunteering as a robotics mentor for young girls and boys.
“I’m thrilled to see President Obama highlight this leader within our community, as I’m thrilled to see him fight for an America that makes the most of the talents this nation has to draw on. That includes creating a common sense immigration system and ensuring our students don’t fall victim to gun violence. It means we invest in our future responsibly, while coming together to pass a big deal to avoid the looming financial challenges we face. We cannot keep governing by jumping from one fiscal cliff to the next – eventually we’ll fall in. Tonight, President Obama gave us a realistic alternative to that fate, and it’s one I am proud to join him in fighting for.”
