November 6, 2015
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) joined with the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and Managed Career Solutions (MCS) to celebrate the receipt of a Department of Labor American Apprenticeship Grant. This grant is one of only five awarded in California. Rep. Chu released the following statement:

“Technology and biotechnology are some of the fastest growing fields in our area, with great economic opportunities for those workers. Yet minorities and women are typically underrepresented in that workforce. That is why I was proud to lead a letter to the Secretary of Labor Tom Perez in support of the partnership between LACCD and MCS for the OpenTech L.A. apprenticeship program. This apprenticeship program will tear down barriers and open the door to success for all communities. I want to thank LACCD and MCS for their dedication to the students in our community, and for finding new and innovative ways to serve both the students who come here to learn, and the businesses who operate here with the skills and workforce they need to succeed.”

On July 29th, 2015, Congresswoman Chu led a letter, along with 8 other members of the Los Angeles Congressional Delegation, to U.S. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez supporting LACCD and MCS Economic Development’s application for the American Apprenticeship Grant. The grant will support the OpenTech L.A. Regional Apprenticeship Collaborative which provides quality apprenticeship opportunities for disadvantaged youth populations in the Los Angeles area, and creates pathways to high-growth technology and biotechnology careers. Congresswoman Chu was a professor within the LACCD for over twenty years before entering public service.
