Rep. Judy Chu Releases Statement in Response to Vitter-Paul Proposal Altering Natural-Born Citizenship Rules

January 28, 2011
Press Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Judy Chu, D-CA32, today issued the following statement regarding a proposal by Republicans in the U.S. Senate that would strip American citizenship from certain naturally born U.S. residents, in direct contravention of the U.S. Constitution’s Fourteenth Amendment:

“I strongly condemn and vehemently oppose the proposal by Sens. David Vitter (R-LA) and Rand Paul (R-KY) that would infringe upon the right of natural-born citizenship enshrined in our Constitution’s Fourteenth Amendment,” said Rep. Chu. “Anyone who would support such a proposal has obviously forgotten – or at least discounted – the fact that hundreds of thousands of Americans gave their lives during the Civil War to fight the injustices that the Fourteenth Amendment finally corrected. It is deeply disturbing to me that today, in the 21st Century, there are those who would take us back to a time when our nation didn’t fully live up to the ideals of equality and fairness upon which it was founded upon. But I am confident that the American people, our Congress, and our President will recognize the intolerance and divisiveness that such a proposal truly represents and ultimately defeat any such measure and uphold the spirit and the letter of the U.S. Constitution.”
