Rep. Chu Statement on Trump Ending CA Clean Air Authority

Washington, DC — On Wednesday, President Donald Trump revoked California’s current waiver under the 1970 Clean Air Act to set their own emissions standards. Already, 13 states have adopted California’s stricter standards due to their success at reducing pollution and improving health outcomes. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), who cosponsored new legislation today to express Congressional disapproval of the President’s revocation of California’s waiver, issued the following statement:

Washington, DC —Yesterday, NBC announced the removal of Shane Gillis from the cast of Saturday Night Live. Gillis was announced as a cast member last week along with Bowen Yang, who is only the third Asian American in history to star as a full-time Saturday Night Live cast member. Gillis’ removal came after a public outcry over racist jokes that the comedian made in the past. Rep. Trump administration seeks to deport children with life-threatening illnesses

“There can be no other explanation for why you would target such a small and vulnerable community other than if your goal was to spread fear and hardship,” Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., said.

“This is all in character for an administration that is separating families and abusing children in prison camps at the border,” Chu added.

Chu has filed a bill to defund the public charge rule but said “it’s clear that this administration will not stop looking for any opportunity to wage war on immigrants.”

Rep. Chu Statement on Trump Administration Plan to Abuse Immigrant Children

Washington, DC — Today, Acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan announced a final rule instituting numerous significant changes to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Health and Human Services (HHS) policy that will undercut protections for immigrant children. The regulation attempts to undermine the Flores Settlement, which protects immigrant children in DHS custody from harmful or inhumane conditions, for instance, mandating that children be held for no longer than 20 days.

Rep. Chu Statement on Planned Parenthood Being Forced Out Of Title X Program

Washington, DC — On Monday afternoon, Planned Parenthood announced they would be withdrawing from the Title X federal grant program, which provides funding for contraception, cancer screenings, family planning, and STI testing for 4 million low-income patients a year. The decision comes after a federal appeals court in California failed to block the Trump Administration’s “Title X gag rule” which prohibits any Title X grantee from providing or even referring patients to abortion services, even if a patient requests such information.
