Rep. Chu Statement on Second Sec. Mayorkas Impeachment Vote

February 13, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the House of Representatives voted 214-213 to impeach the Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) did not vote and released the following statement:

"Unfortunately, I recently tested positive for COVID-19 and am isolating in accordance with CDC guidelines. Today, I was unable to be on the Floor to vote once again against impeaching Secretary Mayorkas. As I stated last week when this was first put to the House:  impeaching a Cabinet member over policy disagreements isn’t a solution to our broken immigration system. This is an abuse of power by House Republicans, and they degrade the oath they took to the Constitution to score cheap political points with their extremist MAGA base. I hope to return in short order to the House to do the actual work of the American people: lower costs, protect freedom at home and abroad, and keep our communities safe."
