Rep. Chu Warns of Impending Republican Government Shutdown

December 19, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) issued a statement on the impending Republican shutdown of the federal government on Saturday:

“With the ink barely dry on a bipartisan deal between Speaker Johnson and Congressional Democrats to fund the federal government and provide relief to natural disaster victims all over America, self-designated President Elon Musk – an unelected billionaire and world’s richest man – ordered a government shutdown that will hurt working people all across this country. Donald Trump, Speaker Johnson, and House Republicans heard their marching orders and reneged on a deal that would avert a government shutdown and help disaster victims from California to North Carolina, Florida to Vermont. Without the natural disaster funds in the bipartisan agreement, my district, which suffered from the catastrophic Bridge Fire, will lose out on the $75 million dollars for California to provide the fire breaks in forests that can stop wildfires. And without a government funding agreement before Saturday, a Republican government shutdown will mean our servicemembers both home and abroad will have to work the holidays without pay, Americans trying to get home to see family will face chaos and delays at airports as TSA agents go without pay, and small business owners just trying to survive will lose access to federal loans. Food and water safety will be at risk, national parks will close, and Meals on Wheels deliveries will halt.

“House Republicans still have a choice: they can work on a bipartisan basis with Democrats to support families and disaster survivors or they can side with billionaires and shut down the government, leaving working Americans out in the cold during the holidays.”
