Rep. Chu Invites AAPI Dreamer to Attend State of the Union

January 25, 2018
Press Release

Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) has invited Jung Bin Cho, a 23-year old Dreamer, to be her official guest at President Trump’s State of the Union scheduled for January 30th. Jung Bin Cho’s family emigrated to the U.S. from Korea in 2001 with the hope of attaining the American Dream for their children. Thanks to DACA, Jung Bin was able to work and save money that allowed him to graduate from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Information Technology. Rep. Chu released the following statement:

“I’m honored to invite Jung Bin Cho to be my guest at this year’s State of the Union. An immigrant who has worked hard to earn a higher degree on his path to even greater success, Jung Bin is a sterling example of the American Dream, and how it is within reach for any who work for it. But Trump’s cruel immigration proposals, which turn prejudice into policy, threaten to put that dream out of reach for too many. And in addition to the future implications of Trump’s war on immigrants, I invited Jun Bin so that Trump could see the face of immigrants today. Dreamers have known no home but America. They have contributed through school, work, or military service. And they’ve stayed within the law. Deporting them now would be both cruel and counterproductive, causing serious disruptions to families and communities alike. People like Jung Bin are American in every way. Instead of deporting them, we should encourage others to be more like them. It’s time that Trump faces the reality of immigration in America instead of hiding behind the fiction sold him by his extremist aides and others. Trump himself has called for immigration reform with ‘heart’ and just this week expressed a desire to reward immigrants who work hard. It is my hope that seeing Dreamers like Jung Bin will make him understand that ending DACA fails on both points.”
