Rep. Chu Statement on Trump Ending CA Clean Air Authority

September 18, 2019
Press Release

Washington, DC — On Wednesday, President Donald Trump revoked California’s current waiver under the 1970 Clean Air Act to set their own emissions standards. Already, 13 states have adopted California’s stricter standards due to their success at reducing pollution and improving health outcomes. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), who cosponsored new legislation today to express Congressional disapproval of the President’s revocation of California’s waiver, issued the following statement:

“California’s clean air regulations, which have been in place for decades, are evidence that smart policies can be effective at improving the environment while also growing our economy. That is why 13 other states have already followed our example, adopting these standards to reduce emissions that we know pollute the air and lead to problems like asthma in youth. This is a vindictive action by a President to punish California for modeling the success of policies he opposes, from immigration to the environment. We must use every tool available to stop such petty bullying from putting the lives of California families at risk. I’m proud to be a cosponsor of a resolution demonstrating that Congress disapproves of this revocation of our legal authority. And I am proud to support Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s legal challenge.”
