Reps. Chu and Roybal-Allard Host Teach-In on GOP Tax Scam

February 23, 2018
Press Release

Washington, D.C.— On Thursday night, Reps. Judy Chu (CA-27) and Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40) hosted a “teach-in” to educate constituents about the new tax law at All Saints Church in Pasadena. The teach-in was a response to the confusion created by the new tax law, signed in the final days of 2017, and how it will impact tax filing. It featured experts and local officials who provided information on what this tax law means for Southern California and the country’s economic future. The teach-in is one of many being hosted by Democratic Members of Congress across the country. Reps. Chu and Roybal-Allard released the following statements:

“Since this law passed, I have been hearing from constituents and families from across the San Gabriel Valley who have told me they are filled with confusion and uncertainty when trying to plan their finances,” said Rep. Chu. “Some can’t even predict what their tax burden is going to be anymore. That’s because, despite Republican promises to create a more simple tax code that gives every family a raise, what they passed does neither. Instead, Republicans completely cut Democrats out of what should have been a bipartisan process, and chose to rush through passing a bill that cuts taxes on corporations and the wealthiest few, while raising taxes on families and borrowing $2 trillion from our children to make today’s rich richer. Californians are in a particularly bad spot, because the tax bill’s changes to the SALT deduction mean Californians are going to have to choose between higher taxes and a lower standard of living. It’s just one of the ways this bill has left us worse than before. As a member of the House Ways and Means committee, I offered amendments that would have ensured more Americans would benefit from this bill, but each one was defeated by a party-line vote. Republicans weren’t interested in real reform so much as they were in making the rich richer. And that disconnect between their promise and what they delivered to the American people is creating confusion. That is why my colleague Lucille Roybal-Allard and I decided to host this teach-in. In order to ensure the economic stability of our constituents, we want them to how they can best plan for their future. I was so pleased with tonight’s turn out and I look forward to when I am able to host events explaining the good government has done for my constituents, not the confusion it has caused and the burden it has created.”

“I was very pleased to join with my colleague, Rep. Judy Chu, to share the facts about the GOP Tax Scam by hosting this teach-in,” said Rep. Roybal-Allard.  “The Republicans’ scam gives massive permanent tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest Americans.  Meanwhile, working families get extremely modest temporary tax cuts that mask the scam's painful and costly impacts on the middle class.  The scam eliminates the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, which will hike the average health insurance premium by 10 percent.  The scam explodes the debt, which Republicans will use to justify ransacking Medicare and Medicaid.  This tax scam is another example of the same failed Republican economic policies we’ve seen before.  And unfortunately, the vast majority of the American public will feel the pain so Republicans can further enrich their wealthy benefactors.”
