In their suits and pearls, members of Congress stood on the House floor and staged a public reading for a full hour Wednesday night. Their material was the viral letter penned by Anonymous, the woman who was sexually assaulted on the Stanford University campus last year. She had read the same letter to her attacker, Brock Turner, in court — describing what that night, the ensuing legal battle, and the fact that he was sentenced to only six months in prison, had done to her.

Today, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi named Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) as one of the Democrats who will serve on a conference committee to complete legislation addressing the opioid epidemic. The conference committee was selected to reconcile the 18 opioid bills passed by the House of Representatives last week with the single opioid measure passed by the Senate in March. The compromise legislation reconciled by the conference committee will then be resubmitted to the House and Senate for final approval.

Today, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Homeland Security, and Investigations held a hearing entitled “Synthetic Drugs, Real Danger.” The purpose of this hearing is to examine the growing problem of the manufacture and use of synthetic drugs and law enforcement responses.

Today, Reps. Judy Chu (CA-27) and John Katko (NY-24) introduced the Helping Extract Animals from Red Tape (HEART) Act, which would expedite the rehabilitation process of abused animals that are seized under federal law by the government. The HEART Act would also place the burden of paying for the cost of caring for these animals to the person claiming an interest in the animal, rather than local animal shelters

On Wednesday, two shooters arrived at a holiday party at the Inland Regional Center, a social services center in San Bernardino, California. Armed with assault weapons and tactical gear, they killed at least 14 people and wounded at least 17 others. The shooting was the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since Sandy Hook, three years ago.
