Rep. Chu, House Democrats Vote to Avert Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) issued a statement after the House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 10545 - American Relief Act, 2025. Rep. Chu voted yes on the legislation, which would fund the federal government through March 14th and provide disaster assistance to victims across the country, including in California:
“After days of Republican brinksmanship and threats to shut down the government at the behest of unelected billionaire Elon Musk and, later, Donald Trump, Democrats once again stepped in to provide the majority of votes to prevent a catastrophic government shutdown right before the holidays. While this legislation falls far short of the bipartisan agreement that Democrats and Republicans struck earlier this week, it would provide much-needed disaster relief to victims across the country, including in my district, which is recovering from the devastating Bridge Fire. And, it would ensure that servicemembers and federal employees are not forced to miss a paycheck just days before the holiday season. For these reasons, I voted yes.
“Today’s vote was only possible because Democrats resoundingly rejected Republicans’ efforts yesterday to give themselves carte-blanche to cut working Americans’ Social Security and Medicare in order to fund another round of tax cuts for billionaires like Elon Musk and Donald Trump. I will continue to do everything in my power to protect these hard-earned benefits from Republican cuts when government funding expires once again in less than three months.”
