Rep. Chu Praises Establishment of a New White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention

September 21, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, President Joe Biden announced he will create a new office in the White House dedicated to gun violence prevention, to be overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris. This office will address the escalating gun violence crisis in our nation through collaborative efforts at both the federal and state levels, in partnership with leading gun violence prevention organizations. Its primary objective is to empower our communities with the necessary resources to implement the safe gun laws outlined in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022.

Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) released a statement in response:

“This year alone, we have already surpassed 500 mass shootings in the United States, with one occurring in my own hometown of Monterey Park, California. It remains inspiring how seriously the Biden-Harris Administration takes the gun violence epidemic in my community and around the entire country, and the establishment of a new office in the White House dedicated to gun violence prevention builds on their previous actions. No community should have to endure the devastating consequences victims, survivors, and our entire community have.

“While Democrats are boldly confronting the influence of the gun lobby, Republicans appear unwilling to prioritize the safety of the American people. The President has again taken decisive action, but my Republican House colleagues have so far refused to bring any commonsense gun safety legislation to the floor for a vote—including my own legislative package to strengthen our red flag laws and make gun safety resources more accessible to everyone in America. This office cuts through Republican inaction and instead focuses the implementation of common-sense gun safety measures across our nation. I look forward to collaboration with Vice President Harris and the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention once it is stood up formally.”
