Rep. Chu Statement on California Wildfire Disaster Supplemental Aid Request

February 21, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) released this statement regarding Governor Gavin Newsom’s supplemental disaster assistance request sent to congressional leadership and the California delegation:

“I’m incredibly grateful to Governor Newsom and his Office for working quickly and comprehensively on today’s request for supplemental disaster assistance appropriations from Congress to serve communities devastated by the Eaton and Palisades Fires, including my constituents in Altadena and northern Pasadena. This package will provide an injection of desperately needed federal aid for rebuilding homes, businesses, and community institutions, which will support the healing process for Angelenos suffering the grief and trauma of losing loved ones, homes, and every belonging they cherished. As with every catastrophic natural disaster that’s pummeled an American community in our history, I look forward to working with Congressional leadership and the President to pass a supplemental disaster package to address these recent wildfires, with no strings attached. My invitations to President Trump and Speaker Johnson to visit the destruction from the Eaton Fire still stand, so that they can see first-hand the damage and talk face-to-face with my constituents. Ultimately, as Americans, we don’t turn our backs on our neighbors in need or punish them for political differences; we lift them up and support them in their restoration, recovery, and healing.”
