Rep. Chu Statement on Censure of Paul Gosar

November 18, 2021
Press Release

Washington, DC — On Wednesday November 17th, the House of Representatives voted to censure Rep. Paul Gosar (AZ-04) and remove him from his committee assignments after he posted an animated video depicting him killing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (NY-14) and injuring President Joe Biden. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) voted for censure and issued the following statement:

“Censuring another Member of the House of Representatives and removing them from their committee is not a punishment I voted for lightly. But the unmistakable threat of violence in Rep. Gosar’s video against our colleague, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, and our President demanded action. Since I have been in office, I have seen two colleagues – Reps. Gabby Giffords and Steve Scalise – shot. And we have seen political violence rising, culminating in the assault on our Capitol by violent rioters whose goal was to do harm. Adding to this atmosphere of violence with a video that glorifies it and clearly depicts Rep. Gosar killing Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is grotesque and inexcusable. We must be examples to the country. Our differences are great, but violence must never be an option. Lacking any sort of reaction from his own colleagues, there was no other option but for the House to act to censure Rep. Gosar.”
