Rep. Chu Statement on Judiciary Committee Hearing on Constitutionality of President Obama’s Immigration Actions

February 25, 2015

Washington, D.C. – With just three days left before funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) runs out, the House Judiciary Committee today held a congressional hearing titled: “The Unconstitutionality of Obama’s Executive Actions on Immigration.” Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), a member of the Judiciary Committee, released the following statement:

“Once again, the Republicans are putting politics first. Instead of ensuring that DHS has the funding it requires, or even considering a single bill to fix the glaring problems with our immigration system, the Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the predetermined ‘unconstitutionality’ of the President’s executive actions. Meanwhile, immigrant families are still living in fear, entire communities are held back by uncertainty about their future status here, and we are barreling towards yet another manufactured government shutdown. What has not happened, however, has been any serious legislative effort to improve our immigration laws, to help families, or help grow our workforce and economy – all of which the President’s actions do. Instead, Republicans are so committed to undoing the President’s actions that they will actually let the agency in charge of our national security go without funding. I am disappointed in today’s politically motivated hearing when there is so much pressing work for our committee to do. We are only two months into this new congress and already we are consumed by shutdowns and repeals. We need real solutions and I urge my colleagues to rejoin us in the work of legislating.”
