Rep. Chu Statement on Passage of Budget Caps Deal

February 9, 2018

Washington, D.C.— Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), issued the following statement on the long-term budget deal that was passed this morning:

"Under President Trump, Congress has lurched from crisis to crisis thanks to a series of arbitrary deadlines born from Republicans' inability to wield a legislative majority. Now, with this budget deal, we have resolved many of those deadlines except one: the fate of our Dreamers. This was a deadline created 100% by President Trump. He chose to end DACA, he chose the date by which he would end their protections, and he chose to complicate negotiations on a deal to let them stay by issuing xenophobic and bigoted demands. All we asked for was a commitment to vote on the Dream Act, a bipartisan bill that would put an end to this pattern of governing by crisis and end the threat against immigrants that an overwhelming majority of Americans and leaders from both parties agree should stay. But instead, the Dreamers, Americans in every way, were left out of the deal. This is not a budget that serves the whole country. It's not a budget that ends the crisis created by Trump's government. And so it is not a budget I could support."
