Rep. Chu Statement Praising Commerce Secretary Raimondo’s Visit to China
WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo is visiting the People’s Republic of China to meet with government officials and U.S. business leaders.
Rep. Chu released the following statement on the visit:
“I commend the Biden-Harris Administration for its commitment to pursue open lines of communication to deepen our bilateral relations with the People’s Republic of China and Secretary Raimondo for undertaking this visit to promote U.S. economic interests and people-to-people relationships. The Secretary has already delivered during the visit by establishing concrete goals and future collaboration opportunities with her counterpart to protect U.S. business interests and reduce misunderstandings of our national security goals. Her visit shows that standing up for U.S. businesses and workers and protecting our national security does not stand at odds with promoting mutually beneficial commercial relationships and strengthening country-to-country communications.
“Further, healthy competition with the Chinese government does not mean that we should cut ties with the Chinese people. That is why I am proud to co-lead H.R. 2381, the Restoring Fulbright Exchanges with China and Hong Kong Act,which would advance U.S. interests diplomatically by improving communication and understanding between our countries.
"I have seen firsthand that after recent events, many communities here in the U.S., including in my California district, have been hurt economically by decreased tourism from China. Secretary Raimondo’s visit is an important step toward easing tensions and shows that the Biden-Harris Administration is delivering on its goals of improving diplomacy and furthering the interests of U.S. businesses and workers.”
