Rep. Chu Statement on President Biden's State of the Union
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) issued the following statement in response to President Biden's State of the Union Address:
"I'm ready to heed President Biden's message tonight and finish the job for the American people. With the two strongest years of job growth in history and a historic vaccination campaign, the Biden-Harris Administration and Congressional Democrats have delivered results for the American people.
"I was thrilled to see President Biden's recognition of Brandon Tsay, the hero from my district who stopped a gunman on the loose who killed eleven people on Lunar New Year's Eve. And I could not agree more with the President – Congress needs to find courage and act now to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines. No community in the country should have to experience the trauma Monterey Park is currently dealing with.
"House Republicans' behavior tonight spoke for itself. However, I was ecstatic to see approval from my colleagues to keep our commitments to seniors and protect Social Security and Medicare. I hope they can now stop using the debt ceiling as a bargaining chip and, in the process, risking financial turmoil and cuts to programs seniors' rely on.
"It was encouraging to hear the President lay out additional plans to invest in workers and American families by reinstating the expanded Child Tax Credit, making child care affordable, and supporting universal paid family and medical leave. It was also reassuring to hear the President push back against the anti-choice extremists in Congress who wants to pass a national abortion ban opposed by the majority of Americans. And at this time of historically low unemployment and job growth, I was glad to hear the President talk about ways that Congressional Democrats have worked to make the American economy fairer for working people—by ensuring tax cheats no longer can avoid accountability and firefighters and teachers do not pay more in taxes than the ultra-wealthy and largest corporations.
"Finally, I was heartened by the President's words of resolve in our Democracy, which continues to face attacks by authoritarian extremists. That means standing up to undemocratic forces, providing no safe harbor to hate and extremism, and fighting for voting rights here so that every American has the chance to participate in our democracy. And it also means standing with the people of Ukraine in their fight against Russian aggression."
