Rep. Chu Statement on Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015
Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015, which would have effectively blocked the Food and Drug Administration and states from labeling genetically modified (GMO) foods. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), who voted against the bill, released the following statement:
“I voted against this bill because what goes into our bodies is not an area for obfuscation or secrets. It is a matter of health and preference that demands transparency so that Americans can make their own informed choices. Unfortunately, this bill makes that harder by preventing states from setting their own standards and lacks a mandatory labeling standard nationwide. Consumers deserve to know what is in their food and that the food we are eating is safe. I am disappointed that the House also voted down Democratic provisions to strengthen labeling efforts.”
