Rep. Chu Statement on TPS for Haitians

November 21, 2017

Washington, DC – On Monday, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they would be ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 59,000 Haitians currently living in the United States. The order gives the Haitians until July 22, 2019 to self-deport. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) released the following statement:

"This order is President Trump's xenophobic, borderline racist and Breitbart-inspired agenda laid bare. With this decision, all of Trump's justifications for his anti-immigrant policies ring hollow. Deporting Haitians is not about the security of our country – none of these immigrants has any ties to terror. This is not about rule of law – they are not criminals or here illegally. And it's not about the economy – their presence here actually improves our economy. It's simply about deporting people who weren't born here. I'm heartbroken for these families who will spend Thanksgiving contemplating a future away from loved ones simply to satisfy an anti-immigrant agenda that is built on prejudice, not factual policy."
