Rep. Chu Welcomes Swearing in of Sen. Butler

October 3, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Sen. Laphonza Butler (CA) was sworn in by Vice President Kamala Harris to serve the remainder of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s term in the U.S. Senate.

Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) issued the following statement:

“Laphonza Butler's historic elevation to the U.S. Senate and swearing in by Vice President Kamala Harris vividly shows the possibility of America. I've known Senator Butler for years and throughout her two-decade career in the labor movement, she has championed workers, pro-family policies, pay equality, and the American democratic project. At EMILYs List, she worked relentlessly to promote the right to reproductive freedom for everyone in this country. As extremists in Congress and across this country launch assaults on LGBTQ+ rights and the right to obtain abortion care, I know Sen. Butler will be a powerful voice for freedom and build on the profound legacy of Sen. Feinstein. I am so excited to partner with her to serve the people of California.”
