At Ways & Means Mark-Up, Rep. Chu Votes in Favor of Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024

January 19, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today during a legislative mark-up, the House Committee on Ways and Means voted the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 favorably out of committee on a vote of 40-3.

Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) voted in favor and issued the following statement:

“In 2021, President Biden and Ways and Means Democrats designed a fully refundable, monthly, and enhanced Child Tax Credit (CTC) that reached every child in America and accomplished something truly incredible:  it cut child poverty in half.  We now have an extremely effective formula for solving child poverty, but without Republican support for its extension, this CTC expired and child poverty has returned to the levels before 2021.  My Democratic colleagues and I will not quit fighting, and that’s why I am encouraged that this tax relief proposal includes an expansion of the CTC that will help lift almost half a million children out of poverty and increase benefits for 16 million children in low-income families.  At the same time, we must be clear-eyed that the legislation that we considered today goes only part of the way to matching the effectiveness of the CTC we designed in 2021, and much more work remains to be done to ensure every child in America can thrive.

“Today’s tax proposal also contains significant, bipartisan provisions that I’ve long supported.  The legislation includes needed enhancements to the Low Income Housing Tax Credit to create more affordable housing units in high-cost areas like my district in Southern California.  I am thrilled that it includes the United States-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act, legislation that I have worked hard to advance and which will implement an income tax agreement with Taiwan to promote mutual investment and unlock the benefits made possible by our strengthening partnership with a leading democracy in Asia.

“When the corporate tax deductions in this proposal expire in 2025, my Democratic colleagues on Ways and Means and I will be eager and ready to secure an even more generous child tax credit and ensure corporations pay their fair share.”
