WHPA Leads Issue Statement Following Second House Passage
Washington, D.C. — Today, the United States House of Representatives once again passed the Women's Health Protection Act of 2022, led by Representatives Judy Chu (CA-27), Lois Frankel (FL-21), Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Ayanna Pressley (MA-07). The 219 – 210 vote on this critical legislation — which previously passed the House in September 2021 — comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, reversing nearly 50 years of precedence and protection. The Women's Health Protection Act will create a federal right for patients to receive and providers to provide abortion care, ensuring every American — regardless of where they live — can make decisions about their own lives and bodies.
"Today, House Democrats affirmed once again we will stand up and fight for abortion rights for every person in this country, regardless of your zip code.Three weeks ago, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs decision — stripping away the fundamental rights of millions of Americans in an instant. Already, we are seeing media reports of the consequences of this decision, from a 10-year-old in Ohio forced to travel to Indiana to get an abortion to the desperate parents banging on clinic doors, begging to be let in for the procedure they knew was the right decision for them," said the Congresswomen. "Across our districts — and our nation — we have never seen such terror from our constituents, or such anger and outrage. The American people are desperate to see us take action and not admit defeat. That is why the House passed our bill today, the Women's Health Protection Act, which creates a federal right to abortion care for every person in every state of this country, and a right for health care providers to provide that care. However, today's historic vote is not the end — and we will never stop fighting to enshrine our right to make our own decisions about our bodies."
