Washington, D.C.- Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Elections Subcommittee Ranking Member and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Charles A. Gonzalez, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Judy Chu and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Emanuel Cleaver today denounced Republican efforts to terminate the Election Assistance Commission, the agency Congress created in the wake of the debacle in Florida during the 2000 Presidential Election. The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) was created by the Help America Vote Act, which Whip Hoyer was the lead co-sponsor of in the House.

Judy Chu (D-CA), Judy Biggert (R-IL), and Mike Coffman (R-CO), along with Senators Feinstein (D-CA) and Brown (R-MA), today announced the introduction of a resolution calling on Congress to formally acknowledge and express regret for the passage of a series of laws during the turn of the 20th Century that violated the fundamental civil rights of Chinese-American settlers.

The Artistic Discovery program began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. The competition is open to high schoolers of all ages. Since its inception, over 650,000 high school students have participated in the nation-wide competition.
