Last night, police rescued 35 immigrants being held hostage in a Baldwin Park, California home. According to reports, they were smuggled into the country from Mexico and Central America and had been held hostage for the past month in an 800-square-foot residence until family members paid their captives a certain sum of money.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-Calif.) made the following statement on this Friday’s deadline to be counted in the 2010 Census:

“Since the Census count only takes place every ten years, it is critical that people take this last opportunity to respond to the Census questions by phone by this Friday,” said Chu. “Being counted in the Census means better schools for our children, more firefighters and police officers to protect our community, and increased funding to repair our roads.”

Rep. Judy Chu today issued the following statement in response to today's 308 – 114 vote in the House of Representatives to pass the Senate’s Amendment to H.R. 4899 – The 2010 Supplemental Appropriations Act 2010. Today's legislation cut $10 billion in funding to prevent teacher layoffs, $1 billion for summer youth employment, $5 billion for Pell grants and $701 million for border security, all of which were offset and budget-neutral, from the previous version of the appropriation bill.
