Washington, DC — On Monday afternoon, Planned Parenthood announced they would be withdrawing from the Title X federal grant program, which provides funding for contraception, cancer screenings, family planning, and STI testing for 4 million low-income patients a year. The decision comes after a federal appeals court in California failed to block the Trump Administration's "Title X gag rule" which prohibits any Title X grantee from providing or even referring patients to abortion services, even if a patient requests such information.

Washington, DC — Contradicting years of federal policy, the Trump Administration today made final a rule proposed by the Department of Homeland Security in October 2018 that would make it difficult for many legal immigrants to come to the U.S. or receive green cards if they have used benefits such as Medicaid, housing assistance, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), among others.

Washington, DC — Today, the House of Representatives unanimously approved of H.R. 3299, the Promoting Respect for Individuals' Dignity and Equality (PRIDE) Act of 2019, introduced by Representatives Judy Chu (CA-27) and Andy Levin (MI-09). The PRIDE Act would remove gendered language like "husband" and "wife" from the tax code to accommodate same sex couples.

Washington, DC — Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) voted for the first increase in the federal minimum wage in ten years by passing H.R. 582, the Raise the Wage Act. The Raise the Wage Act would gradually increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025, and ensure more workers are lifted out of poverty. California is already on schedule to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by January 1, 2023. Rep. Chu issued the following statement:

The House of Representatives today voted to pass the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for Humanitarian Assistance and Security at the Southern Border Act, as passed by the Senate. This bill will provide $4.59 billion in emergency funds to address the crisis at the border, including $2.88 billion for the Department of Health and Human Services to provide shelter for unaccompanied children and $112 million for migrant medical care and other necessities.
