On February 28, 1988, the Armenian population of Artsakh became the target of a violent pogrom which culminated in the violent expulsion of 390,000 Armenians. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) issued the following statement on the anniversary of that tragic violence:

"As the lines of the Soviet Union were fading, the people of Nagorno-Karabakh were united in a call for a say in their own futures and greater independence from Azerbaijan. This peaceful movement for self-determination and freedom was followed by premeditated and government-sponsored attacks.

Washington, DC — Today, for the first time in 25 years, the House of Representatives voted on a major piece of gun violence legislation and passed H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. This legislation expands background checks to cover all sales, closing the "gun show loophole" that allowed private dealers to sell guns without a background check. Rep. Washington, DC — Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) joined Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) and over 100 other sponsors in the House of Representatives to introduce the Medicare for All Act of 2019. The Medicare for All Act improves and expands the Medicare program so that every resident of the United States has guaranteed access to healthcare with comprehensive benefits, including dental, vision, prescription drugs, women's reproductive health services, maternity and newborn care, long term services and supports and more.

Washington, DC — Today, the House of Representatives passed H.J.Res. 46, a resolution that terminates President Trump's declaration of an emergency at the Southern Border. The President declared the emergency on February 15, after two years of inaction on a border wall by a Republican Congress and after Congress explicitly rejected Trump's demand for wall funding. Rep. Washington, DC — U.S. Representatives Judy Chu (D-CA-27) and Jackie Walorski (R-IN-2), along with U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) today re-introduced legislation to ensure breast cancer patients and survivors who have experienced a mastectomy are able to access custom breast prosthetics under Medicare. The Breast Cancer Patient Equity Act would provide coverage for custom fabricated breast prostheses, the only human body part not currently covered by Medicare, to the more than 144,000 women who undergo mastectomies annually.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) reintroduced the Taxpayer Penalty Protection Act, a bill that would shield taxpayers from withholding penalties for the 2018 filing year should they find themselves to be under-withheld due to the rushed changes made in the Republican tax law. Because of the new IRS withholding tables, and the fact that many taxpayers did not adjust their withholding, GAO found that 30 million filers, or 1 in 5 taxpayers, will find that they owe the IRS this year.
