A congresswoman whose nephew committed suicide while serving as a Marine in Afghanistan is pressing Congress to take action after a government watchdog report found the Pentagon isn't doing enough to prevent hazing. "I've made it my mission to end hazing in our armed services because it is unacceptable and indefensible," Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.) said Tuesday.

"I'd like to ask about law enforcement finding technical solutions. I understand that there may be other methods or solutions for law enforcement when it comes to recovering data on a smartphone. Professor [Susan] Landau argues in her testimony later today that solutions to accessing the data already exist within the forensic analysis community—solutions which may include jailbreaking the phone, amongst others. Or she says other entities within the federal government may have the expertise to crack the code.

Today, Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) announced a pilot program that provides bus service to increase access to metro transit lines for L.A. area commuters. The service, referred to as the “NoHo to Pasadena Express” will connect passengers to the Metro Red/Orange Lines in North Hollywood and the Metro Gold Line in Pasadena, and includes stops in Burbank’s Media District and North Downtown Glendale.

During Sunday night’s Academy Awards show, host Chris Rock introduced “accountants” from the firm PricewaterhouseCoopers with stereotypical Asian and Jewish names and then brought on stage three young Asian children. Rock continued by saying that those who are offended by the joke “can tweet about it on [their] phone that was also made by these kids.”

"It is not right to protest the exclusion of one group by making jokes at the expense of another," Chu said. "While much attention was paid to the way African Americans have been ignored by Hollywood, true diversity must include other minorities as well. It is outrageous that the only role that Asian Americans had at last night's Oscars was to appear as the butt of a joke."

Today, Reps. Judy Chu (CA-27) and John Katko (NY-24) introduced the Helping Extract Animals from Red Tape (HEART) Act, which would expedite the rehabilitation process of abused animals that are seized under federal law by the government. The HEART Act would also place the burden of paying for the cost of caring for these animals to the person claiming an interest in the animal, rather than local animal shelters

"We learned that despite having anti-hazing policies in place, these policies are unevenly implemented and done with little oversight," Chu said. "In addition, the standards among branches can differ radically, with some not even having a system for collecting data on hazing. We cannot claim that any existing prevention and enforcement policies are adequate without understanding the full scope of the problem."
