The effort was led by Judy Chu, representative of California's 28th district, which includes Pasadena and Claremont. Chu is chairwoman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, and ten of her letter's 15 co-signers are also members of the caucus. The co-signers represent areas including Little Tokyo (Xavier Becerra), Gardena (Maxine Waters), and Silicon Valley (Mike Honda).

Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.) said that the 1965 Voting Rights Act helped to fully restore voting rights to Chinese Americans, who were stripped of their rights by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Although that law was repealed in 1943, the voting rights law made sure that Asian American voters got translated voting materials, absentee ballots and "freedom from intimidation at the polls."

At the same time, a lesser-known legislative effort to assist a lesser-known SBA loan program sits idle in Congress. Back in May, before the 7(a) shutdown was on anyone's radar, Rep. Judy Chu reintroduced the Commercial Real Estate and Economic Development Act (CREED Act). The bill will help small businesses expand their access to capital by extending the Small Business Administration's 504 Loan Refinancing Program for five years.

That's why it was so heartening to see Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena, last Friday introduce a bill that would add these lost pieces — an additional 109,492 acres of federal land — back into the monument. Chu announced the legislation at a celebration of the first anniversary of the presidential signing. "We wanted to make sure that the western area was included," Chu simply said at the birthday celebration.

Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) introduced the Acupuncture for Heroes and Seniors Act. The bill permits members of the uniformed services access to qualified acupuncturist services without the requirement of a referral and requires that acupuncture services be offered to all veterans. The bill also ensures that qualified acupuncturist services are covered by Medicare so that seniors have another effective treatment option available to them. In addition to increasing access, the bill recognizes the important contributions of this medical field and makes acupuncturists eligible for appointments as Commissioned Officers in the Armed Forces and in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), voted with 265 other Democratic and Republican Members of Congress to pass H.R. 1314, a bipartisan budget agreement that would lift sequester spending caps and avoid a default on the U.S. debt for the next two years.
