Rep. Chu Votes in Favor of Expanding Child Tax Credit, Ending Double Taxation between U.S. and Taiwan
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the House of Representatives voted 357-70 to pass H.R. 7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024. Previously, the House Ways and Means Committee reported the legislation favorably out of committee on a vote of 40-3.
Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28), who spoke and voted in favor of the bill of during the Ways and Means legislative mark-up, issued the following statement about today’s vote:
“President Biden and Ways and Means Democrats devised an extremely effective formula for cutting child poverty in half through a fully refundable, monthly, and enhanced Child Tax Credit. When Republicans gained control of the House, they allowed this new, improved Child Tax Credit to expire and children to fall into poverty—instead using their majority to waste time on in-fighting and political impeachment stunts. My Democratic colleagues and I did not quit fighting for American families, and that’s why I am encouraged the House has passed a tax relief proposal that begins to return the Child Tax Credit to its strongest form. While significant work remains to ensure every American parents and caregiver can provide for their families, this legislation will help lift almost half a million children out of poverty and increase benefits for 16 million children in low-income families—2 million of whom live in California.
“Today’s legislation also contains noteworthy, bipartisan provisions I’ve fought for, including needed enhancements to the Low Income Housing Tax Credit that will create more affordable housing units in high-cost areas like my district in Southern California. I am thrilled that it includes the United States-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act, legislation I have championed which will implement an income tax agreement with Taiwan to promote mutual investment and unleash economics benefits for us and a leading democracy in Asia.
“I urge its swift passage in the Senate and for President Biden to sign it into law. When the corporate tax deductions in this proposal expire in 2025, I will be eager and ready to secure an even more generous Child Tax Credit for American families and make certain corporations finally pay their fair share.”
