WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s sixth State of the Union address:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the five women who sit on the House Judiciary Committee, Representatives Judy Chu (D-CA), Suzan DelBene (D-WA), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) and Karen Bass (D-CA) sent a letter to Judiciary Committee Chair Bob Goodlatte denouncing his decision to hold the first mark-up of 2014 on a divisive bill to restrict women’s access to reproductive health care. The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 7) would impose sweeping changes to current law to impede women’s access to abortion coverage nationwide.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27) voted against H.J. Res. 59, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013, for failing to extend unemployment insurance for long-term unemployed Americans. Earlier this week, Rep. Chu joined 165 other House Democrats in a letter calling on Speaker Boehner to keep the House in session until an extension can be passed. Congresswoman Chu released the following statement:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today on the House floor, Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27) voted to pass H.R. 3309, the Innovation Act of 2013. This legislation helps curb abusive litigation by patent assertion entities, more commonly referred to as “patent trolls.” These actors abuse the patent system by purchasing the rights to overly broad patents in order to threaten legitimate businesses and consumers with costly litigation. According to a Boston University study, lawsuits brought on by patent trolls cost the U.S. economy more than $29 billion annually.

The Veterans Education Counseling Act, which is co-sponsored by Representatives Mark Takano (D-CA), Paul Cook (R-CA) and Jeff Denham (R-CA), makes GI Bill benefits more transparent by directing the Department of Veterans Affairs to clearly differentiate between Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation and Chapter 36 Educational Counseling.
