WASHINGTON, DC – Sunday marks the 130th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act being signed into law. With the stroke of his pen, President Chester A. Arthur banned all immigration and naturalization into the United States for anyone born in China. Congresswoman Chu has led the fight for an official statement of regret from the U.S. Congress. While her resolution has bipartisan support and an accompanying bill has already passed the Senate unanimously, the House has yet to act. Rep. Chu released the following statement to mark today’s anniversary and to once again call for action:

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Chu (CA-32) announced that an additional $88 million has been secured by the full House Appropriations Committee above the funding levels requested by President Obama for the Mars program. Rep. Chu fought against deep cuts proposed in the budget, sending letters and testifying before the House Appropriations Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee to fight for restoration of this critical funding. WASHINGTON, DC – Today, on the one year anniversary of Lance Corporal Harry Lew’s death from hazing, the chairs of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) joined Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-32), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) in sending a letter to the House Armed Services Committee calling for action to prevent hazing. As the Committee drafts the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013, the chairs call for the legislation to make hazing a crime under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, implement a GAO study on each service’s hazing training and prevention policies and develop of a national hazing database to track hazing incidents and report annually to Congress.
