Yet this is what current school reform proposals call for. This is the folly of continuing down No Child Left Behind's punitive, overly prescriptive path to education reform.

Washington, D.C.- Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Elections Subcommittee Ranking Member and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Charles A. Gonzalez, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Judy Chu and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Emanuel Cleaver today denounced Republican efforts to terminate the Election Assistance Commission, the agency Congress created in the wake of the debacle in Florida during the 2000 Presidential Election. The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) was created by the Help America Vote Act, which Whip Hoyer was the lead co-sponsor of in the House.

Judy Chu (D-CA), Judy Biggert (R-IL), and Mike Coffman (R-CO), along with Senators Feinstein (D-CA) and Brown (R-MA), today announced the introduction of a resolution calling on Congress to formally acknowledge and express regret for the passage of a series of laws during the turn of the 20th Century that violated the fundamental civil rights of Chinese-American settlers.

EL MONTE, CA – Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., announced the winners of her second annual Artistic Discovery Congressional Art Competition during a special ceremony at City of Hope in Duarte last Saturday.

The Artistic Discovery program began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. The competition is open to high schoolers of all ages. Since its inception, over 650,000 high school students have participated in the nation-wide competition.

(El Monte, CA) – U.S. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-32) today commended the Department of Justice’s decision to issue a new information collection request to Office of Management and Budget that would require border state gun dealers to report the sales of more than “long-guns” to one buyer if the guns are purchased within five business days of one another. This proposal will help to adopt a new regulation that will crackdown on illegal gun trafficking in the border states of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

(El Monte, CA) – U.S. Rep. Judy Chu today issued the following statement on the Department of Labor’s announcement that it will begin to consider requests to certify U Visa applications for immigrant victims willing to assist in the investigation and prosecution of qualifying crimes. This will allow immigrants who testify against employers for labor violations to get a temporary U visa. U visas also go to immigrants who are victims of crime or domestic violence and who help law enforcement punish those who break the law.

“Last week’s Camp Ashraf massacre at the hands of the Iraqi Army, which left 300 injured and 34 killed, is unconscionable and must be condemned in the strongest terms by the international community. This senseless act of violence is unacceptable, and I call for the immediate release of hostages taken captive in this brutal attack.”
