This August began triumphantly with the successful landing of the Mars Space Lab/Curiosity rover, and it ends, sadly, with the passing of the first human being to set foot on the Moon: Neil Armstrong.

By bringing the war in Afghanistan to a close, we can save the lives of hundreds of U.S. service members, save tens of billions of dollars, and bring about the inevitable transition to Afghan rule. At a time when our economy is in such dire straits, we need the $230 million we spend in Afghanistan each day to be spent here. At a time when suicide is a greater threat than enemy fire, we need to help our heroes mend. And at a time when the same troops are being sent back for three, four or even five deployments, it’s time to come home.

Today we lost the 2,000th American in Afghanistan. After more than ten long years of war, we must bring this tragic chapter in our history to a close. It’s time to acknowledge that enough is enough!

The price of freedom has never been cheap, and none have paid more dearly for it than the hundreds of thousands of patriotic men and women who have given their lives to preserve our liberty. This weekend, we pay tribute to the incredible sacrifices that they and their families made so you and I can live the American way of life.

Since it was created 1976, Black History Month has been a time to reflect on the contributions of African Americans to our country. Throughout our history, African American men and women have persevered—despite hardship and prejudice—to enrich our nation in innumerable ways.

Today marks the 39th anniversary of the landmark Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court case. The ruling ensured women their Constitutional right to choose what to do with their own bodies, marking a pivotal turning point for safe health practices and for a woman’s right to privacy.
