Washington, DC — Today, Representative Judy Chu (CA-27) led her Ways and Means Democratic colleagues in introducing the Refund Equality Act. For years, same-sex couples in states that recognized legal marriage were wrongfully denied tax refunds they earned because the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) did not allow them to file federal taxes jointly. That law was overturned in 2013 by the Supreme Court's decision in U.S. v.

Washington, DC — Over the weekend, two more horses died at Santa Anita Racetrack making these the 28^th and 29^th horses to die since the start of the meet in December 2018. The 29^th horse died after the owners of Santa Anita Racetrack rejected a request by the California Horse Racing Board to suspend racing for the rest of the meet, which ends this month. Rep. At the forum, Frank Aum, a Senior Expert on North Korea at the US Institute of Peace, testified on security issues. Dr. KJ Seung, an Assistant Professor at the Harvard Medical School Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, spoke about humanitarian aid and health issues.

Washington, DC — Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) introduced the No Federal Funds for Public Charge Act, a bill to prevent any federal funds from being used to implement President Trump's proposed "public charge" rule. The proposed rule, posted on the Federal Register by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on October 10, 2018, greatly expands the list of programs that could be considered when an immigrant is applying for a green card.

Washington, DC — Reps. Judy Chu (CA-27) and Vern Buchanan (FL-16) today introduced legislation to update the Qualified Performing Artist (QPA) tax deduction which helps artists deduct the costs of work-related expenses. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated the ability to claim miscellaneous itemized deductions, which previously allowed these artists to deduct their work expenses. The elimination of these deductions has caused many artists to pay thousands more in taxes.

Washington, DC — The House of Representatives today voted 237-187 to pass H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act of 2019. This bill, introduced by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), provides a pathway to citizenship for over 2.5 million US residents, including Dreamers – those eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) - and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients.

WASHINGTON, DC – Last week, as part of Mental Health Awareness Month, Representative Judy Chu (CA-27) and Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) introduced H.R. 2958, the Increasing Access to Mental Health in Schools Act. This legislation would establish a grant program to increase the number of mental health professionals at low income schools by supporting partnerships between institutions of higher education and local education agencies to support teaching, training, and employment of school counselors, social workers, and psychologists.
