At the announcement of the campaign, Rep. Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) cited that among benefits of becoming citizens include that many educational scholarships are available only to citizens, and that permanent residents only receive half of the social security benefits received by citizens. "There is nothing to lose and everything to gain by becoming a US citizen.

Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) who has been outspoken in her condemnation of Azerbaijan's earlier attacks against Armenians in Sumgait and Baku from 1988-1990, strongly condemned these latest attacks, stating, "I have called on the President to work with both sides in deescalating this conflict, and to suspend aid to Azerbaijan if they continue in their aggression against the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) hosted the Congressional Recognition of Excellence Award (CREA) Ceremony. CREA is a Los Angeles countywide program that showcases and recognizes the various ways the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships Program federal funding is used in various Los Angeles County communities. The ceremony honored 11 local programs and projects in cities throughout the 27th district that have focused on job creation, senior outreach, housing rehabilitation, disabled populations’ accessibility, street improvements, neighborhood recreational activities and single and lower-income families.

Today, Rep. Judy Chu, the Ranking Member of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Tax, and Capital Access, hosted a hearing in her district at the Pasadena City Hall to examine the challenges faced by female entrepreneurs looking to obtain venture capital. Rep. Chu was joined by Rep. Steve Knight (CA-25), who chaired the hearing. They heard testimony from four local female venture capitalists and entrepreneurs about trends in the industry and difficulties faced in obtaining venture capital. According to a recent study by the Kauffman Foundation, 72% of women entrepreneurs listed access to capital as their most critical challenge to launching a new business.

Today, the Supreme Court unanimously decided to uphold the “one person, one vote” rule, which allows voting districts to be apportioned according to total population, rather than just eligible voters. The 8-0 decision in Evenwel v. Abbot ensures that non-voting individuals, including children and noncitizen immigrants, will be represented in the design of districts.

Over the weekend, fighting broke out between Armenians and Azerbaijani troops along the border of Nagorno-Karabakh. Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian area within Azerbaijan, has been self-governed since 1994, when a ceasefire put a halt to a six-year war that started following a declaration of independence there.

Today, the House Small Business Committee approved two bipartisan pieces of legislation that strengthen and improve important Small Business Administration (SBA) programs. H.R. 4783, the Commercializing Small Business Innovation Act of 2016, reauthorizes the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs ahead of their scheduled expiration dates in 2017. H.R. 207, the Small Business Development Centers Improvement Act of 2015, implements reforms to the Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs), Women’s Business Centers (WBCs), and SCORE programs, three of the Small Business Administration’s flagship economic development programs.
