Johnson on November 8, 1965 as part of the President’s “Great Society” initiative. This landmark bill strengthened our nation’s postsecondary and higher education system by making critical federal investments in colleges and universities and providing financial assistance for students.

Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) introduced the Protecting Our Workers from Exploitation and Retaliation (POWER) Act. This legislation will provide U Visa eligibility for immigrant workers who report unsafe or unfair labor practices. The bill will also strengthen labor agencies’ investigative powers and allow a stay of removal and work authorization for workers who file a workplace claim. These reforms will provide all workers with the assurance that they can speak up against illegal business practices without fear of retaliation. The bill is cosponsored by Reps. Bobby Scott (VA-03), Keith Ellison (MN-05), Charles Rangel (NY-13), Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC), and David Cicilline (RI-01).

The effort was led by Judy Chu, representative of California's 28th district, which includes Pasadena and Claremont. Chu is chairwoman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, and ten of her letter's 15 co-signers are also members of the caucus. The co-signers represent areas including Little Tokyo (Xavier Becerra), Gardena (Maxine Waters), and Silicon Valley (Mike Honda).

Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.) said that the 1965 Voting Rights Act helped to fully restore voting rights to Chinese Americans, who were stripped of their rights by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Although that law was repealed in 1943, the voting rights law made sure that Asian American voters got translated voting materials, absentee ballots and "freedom from intimidation at the polls."

That's why it was so heartening to see Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena, last Friday introduce a bill that would add these lost pieces — an additional 109,492 acres of federal land — back into the monument. Chu announced the legislation at a celebration of the first anniversary of the presidential signing.
