Protecting Public Land
In California, we enjoy some of our nation’s most beautiful and accessible parks, forests, and public lands. And I am working to increase protections for treasured lands and waters at home and across the country. That includes my work to enhance recreation opportunities and federal protections in the San Gabriel Mountains.
I also consistently cosponsor legislation to protect endangered species; fund international conservation efforts; and preserve federal forestland, marine environments, and the many delicate natural habitats in need of our protection. But the Trump administration is threatening the progress we’ve achieved on so many of these fronts by rolling back key protections that safeguard our public lands and attacking the workforce that does so much to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the beautiful nature our country has to offer. I will continue working with my Democratic colleagues to prevent further attacks on our nation’s public lands.

Addressing Climate Change
As a member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), I support aggressive action to combat the climate crisis and meet President Biden’s goal of a net-zero economy by midcentury. And as a member of the Ways and Means Committee, I worked on the historic expansion of federal tax incentives for renewable energy, electric vehicles, and energy efficiency that will allow the U.S. to rapidly decarbonize our economy while creating millions of new jobs.
I proudly voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, which is our nation’s largest ever investment in fighting climate change. This law includes expanded and extended tax credits for carbon-free electricity production, battery storage, transportation electrification, building and manufacturing efficiency, and new technologies to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. Together with the investments in grid resilience and EV charging included in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (also referred to as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law) that I enthusiastically supported, our country has taken unprecedented steps to fight climate change.
And I am working hard to strengthen our clean economy workforce while improving community resilience to the effects of climate change, like wildfire and severe storms. That is why I introduced the National Climate Service Corps and Careers Network Act, which would establish a new AmeriCorps program to complete climate resilience projects nationwide while connecting participants with long-term career and workforce development opportunities in the clean economy.
Wildfires
The January 2025 Eaton Fire was the second most destructive wildfire in California’s history. It destroyed nearly 9,500 structures, including 6,000 homes, and displaced over 20,000 people. Most tragically, 19 of our neighbors lost their lives.
The road to recovery for our community remains a long and challenging one, but I am committed to working with government partners at all levels on the recovery efforts for my constituents and for the entire Southern California region. As Americans, we have each other’s backs during these times of immense needs. We must do the same for victims of these fires, and I won’t rest until we secure the federal support they need and deserve.
That’s why I’m working in Congress to fulfill Governor Newsom’s request and pass a $34 billion supplemental disaster package—with no strings attached. I remain hopeful that Congress can, as it has for every previous major disaster in our nation’s history, provide robust funding on a bipartisan basis for disaster relief and disaster victims.
Additionally, I am working through the legislative process to ensure our community and every community across the country is better prepared to mitigate and respond to the increasing threat of natural disasters. And I’m so proud that my bipartisan bill, H.R. 517, the Filing Relief for Natural Disasters Act, was signed into law in July 2025. This legislation allows the Treasury Department and IRS to extend federal tax filing deadlines for individuals living in state-declared disaster zones, even before a federal disaster declaration is issued. When catastrophe strikes during tax filing season, families and businesses should be able to focus on recovery without the risk of tax penalties.
I also introduced the H.R. 753, the bipartisan Fire Information and Reaction Enhancement Act, or FIRE Act. By ensuring that our federal agencies can provide better wildfire forecasting and detection to help prevent, track, and quickly respond to fires, the FIRE Act will protect the San Gabriel Mountains, the communities in their foothills, and all of California from catastrophic wildfires.
And to help survivors of federally designated disasters like the Eaton Fire in California to get back into the workforce, I introduced H.R. 1914, the HIRE CREDIT Act.
