Washington, DC — Over the weekend, two more horses died at Santa Anita Racetrack making these the 28th and 29th horses to die since the start of the meet in December 2018. The 29th horse died after the owners of Santa Anita Racetrack rejected a request by the California Horse Racing Board to suspend racing for the rest of the meet, which ends this month. Rep. Washington, DC — Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) introduced the No Federal Funds for Public Charge Act, a bill to prevent any federal funds from being used to implement President Trump's proposed "public charge" rule. The proposed rule, posted on the Federal Register by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on October 10, 2018, greatly expands the list of programs that could be considered when an immigrant is applying for a green card.
Washington, DC — Reps. Judy Chu (CA-27) and Vern Buchanan (FL-16) today introduced legislation to update the Qualified Performing Artist (QPA) tax deduction which helps artists deduct the costs of work-related expenses. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated the ability to claim miscellaneous itemized deductions, which previously allowed these artists to deduct their work expenses. The elimination of these deductions has caused many artists to pay thousands more in taxes.
Washington, DC — The House of Representatives today voted 237-187 to pass H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act of 2019. This bill, introduced by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), provides a pathway to citizenship for over 2.5 million US residents, including Dreamers – those eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) - and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients.
WASHINGTON, DC – Last week, as part of Mental Health Awareness Month, Representative Judy Chu (CA-27) and Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) introduced H.R. 2958, the Increasing Access to Mental Health in Schools Act. This legislation would establish a grant program to increase the number of mental health professionals at low income schools by supporting partnerships between institutions of higher education and local education agencies to support teaching, training, and employment of school counselors, social workers, and psychologists.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Sunday, May 26, another horse died racing at Santa Anita racetrack. The horse was the 26th to die racing or training at Santa Anita since December 26, and the third in nine days. Rep. Washington, DC — The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) today officially opened the San Gabriel Valley Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), the first Veterans clinic in the San Gabriel Valley in over eight years. The SGV CBOC, located at 7 West Foothill Boulevard in Arcadia, will offer Veterans access to primary care, mental health care, telehealth, and basic laboratory services on an interim basis for the next three to five years until a larger, full-service clinic in the San Gabriel Valley is completed.
